Chicago

Quick 30 hour tourney in the windy city. I expected heat and humidity but got mostly cold temps. Probably a good thing. If it had been hot and humid, guys would have been fallin' like leaves in such a quick tourney.

In our first match we played Jake Elliot and Jonathon Guida. Jake has been playing for awhile now as I remember playing he and Riley Salmons back in Belmar ages ago. Good guy and a really good player. We played well and served Jonathon most of the balls. He hit mostly and Phil had a lot of blocks. The scores were not close. Something like 8 and 13. In our second match we played Jeff Carlucci and Larry Witt who we had played the weekend before in Muskegon. In Muskegon it was a battle in the wind. This game the wind wasn't too bad and we played well. Won 21-13 and 11. In our third game on Friday we played Matty Furbs and Billy Allen who had taken a 25th in the wind of Muskegon. They were much better this tourney and had already won 2 matches vs. good teams. We again played well and beat them 13 and 13. With more time together this could be a solid team. Not sure what will happen with Casey and Matt in the future but certainly Billy is throwing his name in the hat to move up for next year. In our fourth and last game on Friday we played Nick and Brad in the semis of the winners. We again played well and won 13 and 13. At one point Brad said to me that it seemed like Phil was touching 14 feet. Never played 4 games in the winners bracket in one day before. Even at my elderly years new things are happening.

On Saturday we played Jake and Rosy in the semis of the winners. Rosy has been nursing a busted up wrist this past month and I think has to get surgery to fix it after the season. One thing I know for sure, it doesn't affect his hitting. He crushed some balls hard. Hopefully he can play out the end of the season and then take care of his injury. The first game was a battle that they won in the end, 25-23. The second game we pulled ahead and never let go winning 21-15. In the third they were just out of sorts and we won 15-5. They had lost in the second round and then grovelled through the losers bracket. They played 5 matches on Friday and 3 matches on Saturday, 2 of those matches in the early morning before we played them. In the finals we lost to John and Sean. John played some of the best volleyball I have seen. Sided out really well and scooped driven balls and shots. The first game they crushed us from the get go beating us 21-17. The score looks a lot closer as we scored some points at the end. In the second we were on and they were not and we won 21-15. The third was back and forth until 12-12. I believe John scooped me and put it away, then I hit a ball out by 2 inches down the line and then John scooped me and put it away for game. The first point might have been a stuff on me by Sean. Can't remember for sure. At any rate, they played well and we didn't raise our game to their level. Now on to Cincinnati and what I am hoping may be the biggest crowd the AVP tour has ever seen.

Todd,

Great playing from both you and Phil in the fast paced tourney. I have played against Jake in his local stomping grounds of the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms in S.C., like you said great ball player. Was wondering what you meant by the number of fans in Ohio? Expecting a big crowd? That would be good for the tour. From what I can see the new management is doing things right. Had a chance to briefly read the new players agreement and it seems that management is very excited about making the tour better for both the players and the sponsors. I know I am rambling but what is the deal with Jen/April and Tyra/Angie as far as the last FIVB tourney? Did they basically just show up because of the Bonus pool change that the FIVB made (which is ridiculous)? Just dont see either team losing strait sets to those teams. Interested in your input on that one. Hopefully the AVP and the FIVB can come to a solution on the whole thing. Hope to see you and Phil continue the good play in Ohio.

Hi Todd,

It sure looked like you guys were going to continue your amazing run, the way you mowed everyone down on friday.

I watched the semis and finals on AVP.com. It's impressive that you guys can have somewhat of an off day and still beat Jake/Rosy and almost win in that final agains Sean/John who were almost perfect. I thought Hyden played a career game. He has been so good this year, but was absolutely on fire in that match. Probably as close to a perfect all-around game as I've seen in-terms of both hitting and defense.

Good luck in Cincy. I'm working on getting out for the Vegas tourney. I've never caught an AVP King of Beach format, and it looks like it must be a total blast for players and fans alike.

Hey Todd,

Like I told Hans, your playing in a tennis center. If the CA coastal commission and beach cities would allow the AVP to build a 20,000 seat stadium, the AVP would, and I would guarantee it would be filled.

I watched you guys in Chicago, looked great.

In the final, John played out of his mind. Earned his name oh H-bomb and played D like you.

The weather was crazy, I have a great shot of the crazy fog over center court here:

I can't believe they showed the medical staff actually removing Phil's pinky tie nail on national TV.

Good luck in Cincy.

Woo Hoo! Tournament Of Champions BABY!!!!
And who is that?
John and Sean.
Man was that a beating.
21-16
22-20 (come from behind by 4).
Win in 2?
I'll bet a lot of international teams are watching John and Sean and learning how to play finess ball around you to win.
Just remove Phil from the Blocking and YOU CAN WIN!
Don't hit into him hit all around him and make Todd scramble.
I see a new Leader next season on the AVP.
John and Sean win 4-3 vs. Todd and Phill in the finals.
Tournament Of CHAMPIONS!

When you guys 'want it more', there is no one better - and when you don't 'want it more' - you leave the door slightly open. Sean and John played very well AND they sure looked like they wanted it more than you guys - and yes it's tough to find and or keep the desire burning red hot all the time.

PS - it was awsome to see the "open toe surgury" up close and personal - got to love those shallow sand beaches - OUCH!

Todd...
It sounded as though you had already given up after the first game when you were interviewed you said...
"If they keep playing the way they are they are going to win".
That sounds like you gave up because had you said...
"If we keep playing the way we are playing we are going to lose" you would have had the focus on yourself.
I guess you knew who would win after being beaten 21-16 in the first.
Then to lose in 2?
WHOA.

Todd was it the biggest crowd the AVP has ever seen?
Did the biggest crowd ever see you get beat?
Pretty badly I might add?

Todd’s accountant told him that he better back off on the winnings as he’s about to move into a dreadful tax bracket!

We love you Todd & Phil, and what’s better than a bunch of adoring fans? There’s nothing that compares to affection and admiration. It’s just that simple.

That is FREAKIN funny!!!!!

Hey if Phil and Todd plan ahead to the future...maybe they can loose even more next year so they save even more money on the tax bracket. Maybe they could win say just 3 or 4 tourneys next year...then they might even qualify for Food Stamps.

Well, somebody in the Scott family had to be a breadwinner...

Hey, whoever you are with the ugly comments… if you are a big fan of Hyden/Scott, they would probably want you to pipe down. You’re going to give them a reputation of having ghastly fans. Friendly competition is fine, but you are getting just plain boring with your regurgitation of the same old lines.

No one else seems to be writing anything here. Were having friendly chit chat. Contoversy (as you have seen this year with the rivalry here) is good for the sport. It creates excitment. Chill dude. If you don't like the comments then don't look at them. I'm sure Hyden/Scott are up for it. That's how they are winning. They even said they are building on the talk about beating them down that Phil and Todd were qoted as saying. Were not beligerant. We are not using bad words. Chill. Join in or don't read. Like I said NO ONE (including Todd) seems to be writing anything on here anyways.
Oh and your right about Scott needing to be the breadwinner. I love seeing the underdogs prevail. Hyden needed money for his kid too.

SAME OLD LINES? If it were not for our lines there would be nothing here since a week ago...LOL

Ever heard of Rosy's Raiders Bra?
LB crew forever!

Hey...the Raiders are good for the sport. Look at the excitment they bring to the game. You can see the level of play increase if the Raiders are around.

CC- Thanks.

TJ- Cinci has always had the biggest crowds because the promoters do it right and get people in the stands. FIVB thing you nailed on the head. The AVP Contract is a fair contract for both players and management. First one I have signed like that.

Drew- Were you able to make Vegas? Did Shaq's people ever contact you? Just curious.

Arsenal- I tend to think you are correct on that assumption but it will never happen on a Cali beach unless you pay a gazillion dollars to make it happen.

Jody- Agreed on all of that. Weather was weird.

Margo- Sounds like you are learning on the fly. Hope things are still going well for you in school.

UBV- I think you are the only person who liked seeing the toe thing. Everyone else has asked me why on earth they showed that.

Todd
