All-American Podium in Thailand

It could be an All-American Podium this weekend in Thailand. I think that would be pretty cool if it happened. In case you have not been paying attention, Kessy/Ross are playing Akers/Turner in the finals so we are guaranteed the gold and silver. In the bronze medal game Fendrick/Ivy are playing a team from Russia I have never heard of. Fendrick/Ivy lost in the first round of the winners bracket and have come all the way through to the semis before losing to Kessy/Ross. Pretty sure they have never medaled so hopefully they can get their first medal and complete an American sweep.

True beach fans always pay attention but appreciate heads up as don’t want to miss a thing. Since you stay up on things we only have to look one place for info. Grazie! Glad U.S. ladies did well if not the sweep. Looks like AVP.com is going to branch out and give us info on everything that’s volleyball. That’s good because it’s all connected and should be good for the sport and all the players. Hope USAV does get real about supporting beach. Hans really put it out there in his article- wow in your face.

"Big Henry" mesmerized masses in '60s and '70s
By: Matt Landes, on 11/10/2009

A beach icon, Henry Bergman won nearly half of the tournaments he entered.
Henry Bergman, a physical phenomenon known to dominate Santa Barbara beaches before the likes of Karch Kiraly and Todd Rogers, will be remembered by friends and admirers later this month. At 65 years old, Bergman passed away Oct. 5, ending the life of a legend.

Bergman stood out as a star in the volleyball world during a playing career spanning 1965-1973. An icon in the era before the sport offered professional competition (the first commercially sponsored beach tournament occurred in 1974), he never attained the fame and fortune athletes of similar skill have since come to know. Although Bergman’s career winnings total $0, he belongs in the top echelon of the all-time greats.

Known for booming hits that petrified opponents, “Big Henry” won 15 of the 33 “Open” tournaments he entered. Also known as “Mr. Automatic,” Bergman was just that in 1970, when he won six of his seven events. Bergman won seven titles apiece with Larry Rundle and Ron Von Hagen. He also won with Ron Lang.

Of the 18 events he didn’t win, Bergman finished second eight times. He never failed to finish in the top five of a tournament.

Rundle and many other contemporaries from Santa Barbara High School, the beach, and all walks of life will gather to share memories on Saturday, Nov. 21. The memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Café del Sol, located at 30 Los Patos Way in Santa Barbara. Everyone is invited to attend.

For more information on the gathering, feel free to contact Las Kiraly at (805) 680-6139.

Hans Stolfus, the Glenn Beck of volleyball! The article is brilliant; the foundation well-researched, the tone respectful but direct, and the conclusion painfully obvious.

Let us not wait on this matter. Email the link to everyone you know. Hans went to the trenches on this one. Let it not be in vain.

It was rather interesting for me to read this post. Thanks for it. I like such themes and everything that is connected to them. I would like to read a bit more soon.

Wasn’t it the Goo Goo Dolls?

“I wandered through fiction to look for the truth,
buried beneath all the lies…”

Hans sees the red herring, but isn’t distracted by it. That is key and why he’s able to continue toward the truth.

Nice Day of Thanks for the volleyball community? Indeed. Hope everyone’s turkey dinner was easier to get to than mine, 2 road trips later. Didn’t have any of the wines Todd had, though. Not even the cheap bottles were on my diet but I did feast on fresh pineapple all day until I thought I would explode. Yum, what a treat. Someday I’ll figure out how to slice it up without making a mess of it. Blessings!
