Training

Had another good training session against the Canadien team of Mark Heese and Ahren Cadieux on Thursday. We mostly did drills working on some specific things but finished with a match. Phil and I won in 3 games. 3rd game was a barnburner and it was good to get the competitive juices flowing. Mark and Ahren are around the 20th ranked team in the world and it was good to compete against another FIVB team since our first tourney of the year will be on the FIVB in Australia. That tourney is in late March.

Outside of the volleyball training I also had a great week of physical training. Had a couple of great lifts in the gym. Really went hard and heavy this week but it is good to see the strength still there. Also changed it up at the track a little bit. Difficult workout but made it through and felt fairly good. Then got crushed by Kaleo my massage therapist. That might be the most painful "workout" of them all.

Good stuff

Being a Canadian and having touched my first volleyball in Calgary, would like to see them do well in the FIVB and Olympics.

How are Phil's and your's heads right about now? More focused on FIVB or AVP or Olympics or just day to day training? Any sports psych working with you?

Lots of questions and if too personal no biggy.

Hey Todd, welcome back! Thanks for posting as always - we appreciate it. BTW, what do your track workouts consist of? (100s, 440s)

Hi Todd,

Being an American who lives in the Greater Toronto Area and a huge beach volleyball fan, I've know Mark and Ahren well. They are good guys as well as great beach players. I'm sure they provided good competition for you. I love Mark and Ahren, but my heart always goes with the stars and stripes.

Jeff- I hope they make it and do well too. Known them for awhile and like them both.
Phil and I are in a good place right now. Need to work on a lot of stuff but more because we are rusty than anything else. Most everything this year is done with a focus on the Olympics. It is the end game. No sports psych work. Not against it, just have not done it. Plus, I don't think Phil and I have to many issues to work out. That is a bonus of course.

Working out in both. With Phil, mostly at East or in LA with other teams. Although some teams have expressed an interest in coming up and playing on the court.

Steve- Start out with 440's in December and January. Now at 300's. All on time with a timed rest. Plus jumping plyo stuff and movement stuff. End with stadiums in the stadium from hell. The steps get bigger and steeper as you go to the top.

Kip- Thanks.

I would really like to know more about your Plyo training overall. I am 6.1 like you and I dont have a easy time spiking. Some questions to you about plyo:

1. What should you focus most on, gym for strong legs or the jumping itself?

2. When jumping, do you do it on hard surface or sand?

3. Do you use a weighted vest when you do jump training, and even when you play? If not, why?

Sorry for my bad english, im not a native :).

Thx for a great blog Todd!!

Todd,

Glad to hear that the training is going well. I look forward to watching you two dominate again this year. Will you and Phil be playing in Charleston again this year? My partner and I are going to make the trip. Take care.

Todd,

Check out my web page, something you and big Phil could use.

Peter- I am not the expert and that is why I have people to help me out with how to train.
1. I do both. Gym and jumping. You have to train your jump mechanics and you need someone to watch you who knows what they are doing. Same with the weights.
2. Both - Transition from a harder surface to the sand based on the season.
3. Use a weighted vest with some of the plyo's but not all. Not while I train. I would think it would be a good way to hurt yourself if you are trying to change direction quickly. Throw out the back.

TJ- Very nice website. Hearing you on that and need to get on the camera and video camera to get footage up. Pictures of the court, that kind of thing. Little more interactive stuff. Hopefully will see you in Charleston.
