From AVP.com's, here's a quote from Canyon Ceman's recap of Belmar:

"Phil and Todd’s level of dominance is reminiscent of Karch and Kent, something I didn’t think I would ever say."

Back in 2006, first year at Coney Island, I told you & Phil that you guys reminded me of Karch & Kent. Then you went on to finish 3rd. Perhaps I jinxed you. But look what's happened since! You've become the world's #1 team!!
Congratulations on Belmar, amazing match, even though we know it isn't easy, sometimes you guys sure make it look that way. Good luck back on the FIVB!

I watched the Mens Belmar Final on the NBC Universal site...which is about as useful as a parachute on a nuclear submarine. Geeter, Walsh and Blanton were comparing the all time teams during the broadcast. By the way all 3 of them are on Twitter....we need to get Todd and Phil to start tweeting too.

As I have said before Todd and Phil are the greatest team of all time under the current incarnation of Beach Volleyball using FIVB rules and rally scoring. Under the old rules with sideout scoring, regulation court size and no time clock Karch and Kent at their zenith were better than Smith and Stoklos thus they are the greatest team ever.
There is NO WAY to determine if the current players like Phil could physically survive the rigors of the old rules. Many times Mike Whitmarsh went off the court in exhaustion under the old rules and even His Highness Karch Kiraly cramped on occasion. You dont see that under the current rules so much.

The Belamr Final seemed pretty low key except for the outbursts about the ref who seemed like he just got off a bar stool at Tony Sopranos' Bada Bing Club. Todd and Phil are "in their heads" against Team Frat Boys much like April and Kessey are dominating Misty/Nicole. Why cant ESPN show both the mens and womens finals but show Worlds Strongest Fat Guy, bowling and poker? Travesty.....Best of luck to our guys in Norway!!! Scott

I think Karch only cramped once, as far as I can remember cuz I watched it. He cramped because he thought they ran out of food in the players tent (he only had fruit) but they actually hid the food to make sure there was some left for the players. Ironic, eh?
I think Todd & Phil would have done pretty well with the sideout scoring and bigger court. Can you imagine Phil's jump serve with another 6 feet of court?

Good points Garret...yes I remember that tourney Karch cramped...was in Texas I think. From then on I think he kept cans of baby food in his bag...this was before all the high tech energy bars.

Phils jump serve would be good but he would have a longer run to the net after every serve and also more net to cover. Whereas Karch and Kent could both block and save energy. Like I said it is impossible to determine but good fodder for debate.

I have been watching these AVP and FIVB tourneys and I dont care what anyone says the guys hand setting are throwing the ball. The one time I met Stoklos we were talking and Matt Gage the tourney Director walked by. Stoklos confronted him and said "What are you going to do about these guys throwing the ball?" So this is an age old problem.
